Dentist Placed Implant He Knew Would Fail

Posted by writeradmin

I am a bit upset about a situation with my dental implant. I had talked to my dentist about a tooth replacement. He told me the best tooth replacement was a dental implant. I paid for a bunch of tests and he said that we were good to go. However, when I woke up from the surgery, he told me that there ended up not being enough bone for the dental implant. Despite that, he placed the implant. Now he is suggesting that I remove it and get a dental bridge. I’m sort of annoyed. Should I have to pay for the dental implant to be removed? I mean, he placed it knowing it would have to be removed.

Dear Garth,

No, you should not have to pay for the removal surgery. While he is correct that for a dental implant to work it needs adequate bone support, had he done the appropriate diagnostics, he would have known that you didn’t have that bone support. Knowing that ahead of time not only would have prevented unnecessary surgery, but it also would have given you the opportunity to have some bone grafting done. Bone grafting is a procedure that builds up your bone enough to provide what you need to support the dental implant.

Secondly, he placed your dental implant, knowing that it would fail. Saying that it is unethical is the least I can say about that. I am so sorry this happened to you. I don’t know how your dentist thinks he can get away with this. It’s malpractice. He owes you more than a refund. He put you at risk with surgery, he’s caused you a number of problems with a failed procedure, and left you holding the bag.

You can still get a dental implant, but it is going to take removing the implant, having the bone grafting done, and then getting the dental implant. If you want to do that, a dental implant is the best tooth replacement. If you don’t want to do that, then a dental bridge is a respectable second option.

Whatever you decide, I think your dentist should pay for it because of how he handled the situation. However, don’t let your dentist do the work. He is obviously not the best dentist.
