Amalgam Fillings vs. Composite Fillings
Amalgam fillings are composed of a mix of metals, about 50% of which is mercury. Although the American Dental Association considers amalgam fillings safe, some people just aren’t comfortable with mercury as a material for their dental restorations. The aesthetics of amalgam fillings are also a concern: silver fillings on natural-colored teeth are far from discreet.
Composite fillings are made of tooth-colored composite material that bonds to your teeth, giving them a strength that actually surpasses a tooth filled with amalgam. And as you can see in the image at right, a composite filling blends in so beautifully with the surrounding teeth that you can’t even tell it’s there.
