Common Causes of Toothaches

Toothaches vary in severity and cause. Some common causes of toothaches include:

  • Tooth decay
  • Dental abscess or infection
  • Damage to a tooth, filling, or crown
  • Gum disease
  • Tooth grinding

When Should I Seek Treatment?

A woman holds her right hand up to her face as she winces in pain.If your tooth is sensitive to cold, air, or touch, you need to let us know during your checkup, but it ordinarily shouldn’t require an extra visit to the office. But if the pain is spontaneous, or if the pain lasts more than a couple of seconds after the stimulus, you should come in right away. We prioritize dental emergencies and can see you today if you call us during normal business hours. Treating the source of your pain as soon as possible will not only get you feeling better faster but will prevent the problem from getting worse over time.

The following symptoms also indicate a need for urgent dental care, so let us know right away if you experience:

  • Swelling in your face or jaw
  • Fever over 101° F
  • Pain that isn’t helped by medication
  • Pain when biting

Be aware of the following symptoms of a serious condition, and go directly to the ER if you experience:

  • Swelling around your eye
  • Swelling in your neck
  • A knot in your jaw area

Will I Need a Root Canal?

Some toothaches, though not all, are caused by an infection inside your tooth. In these cases, root canal treatment is needed to remove the infection and seal the tooth. Fear of this procedure can sometimes cause people to put off dental care. But it’s important to know that with modern techniques, this type of treatment is actually not difficult for the patient. You can learn more on our Root Canal Treatment page. Whether or not an infection is the source of your pain, a persistent toothache needs to be addressed. So please don’t hesitate to receive care, and know that we are dedicated to keeping you comfortable during whatever treatment you may need.
